When Morne Morkel stepped down as Pakistan’s bowling coach after the World Cup last year, tearaway fast bowler Naseem Shah posted a picture with Morkel, captioned “More than a coach for me.” Naseem was the biggest beneficiary of Morkel’s tenure, evolving from a talented but inconsistent pacer into a relentless threat to batsmen. “He taught me to be selfless,” Naseem would later say.

During matches, Morkel would often be seen lying on the boundary cushions, monitoring Naseem and Shaheen Shah Afridi, ready to offer advice whenever needed. This familiar sight at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) dugout will now be common during India’s games as well, with Morkel taking over as the national team’s bowling coach.
