Why is Breaking an Olympic Sport?
Breaking was introduced as an Olympic sport because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is dedicated to including sports that resonate with a wide range of age groups and appeal to modern audiences. In recent years, the IOC has added sports like skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing to the Games to align with this vision, and Breaking fits perfectly within this trend.
The sport made its Olympic debut at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, where it attracted over 1 million viewers. This confirmed Breaking’s appeal to younger generations, while also sparking interest among older audiences. Due to its widespread popularity, Breaking was officially added to the Olympic program on December 7, 2021. However, it is not scheduled to be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic program.
