Lovlina Borgohain is defeated by the Asian Games champion in the quarter-finals, ending India’s campaign:India’s boxing campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics concluded on Sunday after Lovlina Borgohain was defeated by top-seed Li Qian of China in the quarter-finals. Competing in the women’s 75kg category, the eighth-seeded Borgohain lost by a 4-1 split decision to Li Qian, the reigning Asian Games champion.
A bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020, Borgohain needed to win this bout to secure a medal, as Olympic boxing awards two bronze medals to the losing semi-finalists. Despite a strong start from Li Qian, who landed some powerful punches, Borgohain responded with critical jabs but was eventually pushed onto the defensive. Li Qian’s aggressive attack proved decisive, helping her edge out the reigning middleweight world champion.
Earlier in the tournament, Borgohain had secured a convincing 5-0 victory against Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad in the opening round. Her Paris 2024 qualification came after reaching the final at the Asian Games last year, where Li Qian also defeated her.
Overall, four of the six Indian boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympics did not advance past the quarter-finals. Nishant Dev reached the men’s 71kg quarter-finals but lost to second-seed Marco Verde of Mexico. Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Asian Games bronze medalist Preeti Pawar, and reigning Commonwealth champion Amit Panghal were eliminated in the round of 16. Jaismine Lamboria exited in the round of 32.
